Uluru Tours From Yulara: Walks, Sunrise and Sunset

Most Uluru tours list a price without the A$38 park pass, and the park gate opens at 6:30 am in June but 5:00 am in December. Each card here shows the pass, the walking and the start time before you book.

Quick answer The pick, the real prices and the gate hours

Book the guided base walk at sunrise from $147 for about 10.5 km on foot, the Field of Light sunrise tour from $96.70 for the art instead of the walk, or the Segway from $182 to ride the base. Add the A$38 park pass (about $26.69) to the tours that do not include it, because most listed prices leave it out, and check the all-in rows below. Sunrise tours start in the dark: the base walk departs 1 hour before sunrise and the Field of Light pickup starts 1 hour 45 minutes before, and the park gate hours change month by month. If one day is not enough, the 3-day camping safari from $712.69 adds Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon with park fees included.

Key takeaways

Sunrise base walks, a sunset tour, sunrise with Kata Tjuta, the Segway and the Field of Light, all with pickup at Ayers Rock Resort.

Uluru Tickets and Tour Prices: What You Really Pay

The park pass is the Uluru ticket: A$38 (about $26.69) per adult for 3 consecutive days, free under 18, and most tour prices leave it out. This section adds it back so the totals are the totals.

The Park Pass: Uluru's Only Ticket

Adults pay A$38 (about $26.69) for a park pass valid 3 consecutive days, and one pass covers every tour you take inside those 3 days. An annual pass costs A$50 (about $35.12). There is also an NT-registered vehicle annual pass at A$109 (about $76.57) covering driver and passengers, but it does not apply to tour or hire vehicles.

Under 18s enter free. Buy online in advance at the official booking site or at the entry station on the way in, and bring a digital copy on your phone. The pass covers Uluru and Kata Tjuta only, so Kakadu needs its own pass.

Tour Price Plus Pass, Tour by Tour

The table takes each listed tour price and adds the adult park pass of A$38 (about $26.69) where the listing says the pass is not included, so you see the real per-adult figure. Where a listing contradicts itself on the pass, both possible totals are shown and you should confirm at checkout.

The park is open every day and the gate hours shift with the sun. The guided base walk departs 1 hour before sunrise, the Field of Light pickup starts 1 hour 45 minutes before, and the small-group base trek leaves about 1 hour before. Yulara to Uluru is about 21 km by road, roughly a 24 minute drive by route measurement.

Sunset at Uluru

The small-group sunset tour from SEIT costs $175, runs 5 hours and caps the group at 11. It walks Mutitjulu Waterhole and the Mala Walk, then watches sunset from the Talinguru Nyakunytjaku viewing area with sparkling wine and gourmet treats, and returns you to Ayers Rock Resort after sunset. Cancellation is free up to 3 days out, and an optional iPod carries audio in 6 languages.

If you drive yourself, the park lists a car sunset viewing area and a bus sunset viewing area at Uluru, so coaches and cars are kept apart. The park also asks visitors to photograph only the north-east face of Uluru, and only as wide shots, out of respect for Anangu law and culture.

Sunrise on Foot, on a Segway or Over the Domes

Three morning options cover the ground in very different ways. The guided base walk at sunrise ($147) and the small-group base trek ($175) both walk the full circuit, about 10.5 km, starting around 1 hour before sunrise, and the small-group version allows 6 hours with stops at waterholes and rock art. The sunrise Segway ride ($182) rides the full base after training, limited to 12 riders with a minimum age of 12, and adds a guided walk into Mutitjulu Waterhole.

For the domes instead of the rock, the sunrise and Kata Tjuta coach tour ($147) watches sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, then visits the Kata Tjuta viewpoint and walks Walpa Gorge. The Kata Tjuta tours page compares the walks there.

From the Air

The 20-minute scenic plane flight costs $128.93 and gets you a guaranteed window seat with headsets and live pilot commentary. Door to door it takes about 1.5 hours including hotel pickup and drop-off. The aircraft carries up to 7 passengers, and a minimum of 2 per aircraft applies, so the operator can cancel after confirmation with an alternative flight or a full refund, and times can shift with the weather.

The Uluru scenic flight page sets the plane against the helicopters.

The 10.6 km base walk has little shade, which is why the walking tours start before sunrise.

Field of Light and Sunset Dinners at Uluru

After dark the desert around Uluru glows. This is what the installation is, the tour that reaches it at sunrise, and the dinners sold separately by the resort.

The Field of Light

British-Australian artist Bruce Munro installed the Field of Light in 2016: about 50,000 solar-powered spindles of light spread over 62,500 square metres of desert in sight of Uluru. Voyages has refurbished the whole installation, replacing all the luminous and fibre optics, and extended its run until at least April 2027.

The easiest way in is the Field of Light sunrise tour run by AAT Kings for $96.70 per person. It lasts 2 hours and hotel pickup starts 1 hour 45 minutes before sunrise, so the departure time shifts through the year. Groups run to 65 people. The voucher time can be wrong, so reconfirm your pickup with AAT Kings 24 to 48 hours ahead and be ready 10 minutes early. Tea, coffee or hot chocolate at the sunrise viewing area and entry to the installation are included.

Sunset Dinners Sold by the Resort

Ayers Rock Resort sells its own dusk dining separate from the tour cards on this site. The figures below come from the resort's experiences page, converted at the European Central Bank reference rate. These are booked with the resort, not on the tours here.

When One Day Is Not Enough: Multi-Day Uluru Tours

One day covers Uluru or Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Two to four days add the full base circuit, the Valley of the Winds and Kings Canyon without rushing.

Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon in 3 Days

The 3-day camping safari with Adventure Tours Australia costs $712.69 per person and runs 3 days and 2 nights. It meets at Ayers Rock Airport at 2:00 PM on day one, with pickup in Yulara included, and ends with a drop-off in Alice Springs. Groups are up to 20 people, and the age range is 8 to 80.

National park entry fees, all meals, camping equipment and 2 nights in a permanent tent with bed linen, pillow and towel are included, along with guided walks at Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon (Lost City, Amphitheatre, Garden of Eden, North and South Walls). Cancellation is tiered: a full refund 6 days ahead, then 50% up to 2 days out. Because it starts at the airport and finishes in Alice Springs, it suits travellers moving on to Alice rather than those flying back out of Yulara.

Other Multi-Day Trips and What They Cost

The safari above is not the only way to stretch the Red Centre. These are the published from-prices for multi-day trips by Adventure Tours Australia, AAT Kings and Intrepid, taken from each operator's own pages. Australian figures are converted at the ECB reference rate where that exact amount appears in the pack.

Tours that start at Yulara suit travellers who fly in, and Uluru tours from Alice Springs are where the overland trips begin.

Valley of the Winds in Summer

The Kings Canyon walks on the safari follow the operator's own day plan, so read it before you book a summer departure. At Kata Tjuta the park publishes a firm rule: the Valley of the Winds closes beyond Karu Lookout from 11 am whenever the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36°C or more. Summer days at Yulara regularly pass that, so a hot day can cut the walk back to the first lookout.

Book tours that reach Kata Tjuta early in the morning, carry more water than you think you need, and treat afternoon walking in the hottest months as a bonus.

What an Uluru Trip Costs

The Park Pass and What It Covers

Entry to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park costs A$38 (about $26.69) for an adult, valid 3 consecutive days, and under 18s go free. An annual pass is A$50 (about $35.12), which pays for itself on a longer stay or a return visit within the year. The NT-registered vehicle annual pass is A$109 (about $76.57) and does not apply to tour or hire vehicles.

Buy it online before you arrive or at the entry station on the way in. Most tours on this page leave the pass out of the price, and a few listings contradict themselves, so the all-in table above shows both totals.

Tours, Food and the Rest of It

Half-day ground tours from Yulara run from $147 to $182. The scenic flight is $128.93 and the Field of Light sunrise tour is $96.70. The day trip from Alice Springs is $280 and includes a sunset BBQ dinner with sparkling wine, which the others do not.

The free things are free. Ayers Rock Resort lists guided garden walks, camel visits, Indigenous art galleries and bush food tastings for guests, plus a free resort shuttle. The ranger-guided Mala walk costs nothing beyond the pass, and so do the sunrise and sunset viewing areas.

Getting There Is the Big Expense

The largest cost is usually the flight into Ayers Rock Airport. AAT Kings lists direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns, and flight aggregators also show Brisbane services that may be seasonal. A night at Yulara adds to it, and the resort publishes no room prices, so check your own dates.

Driving from Alice Springs saves the airfare but takes about 450 km each way (AAT Kings says roughly 5.5 hours, a route measurement gives 435 km and about 4 hours 54 minutes). The Alice Springs day trip saves the accommodation and runs about 5 hours each way by coach.

Best Time to Visit Uluru

Average monthly rainfall in millimetres with the average daytime maximum below each bar, from the Bureau of Meteorology record for Yulara Aero. The heat, not the rain, is what decides your month.

  • Cool season (April–September): walking weather
  • Hot season (October–March): walk early, finish by 11 am

June is the coolest month at 20.6°C average maximum, so bring a jacket for a sunrise start. January is the hottest at 38.6°C. December is the wettest month at 40.3 mm and August the driest at 5.0 mm.

When to Come, and What the Month Does to Your Tour

May to September

From May to September the average daytime maximum at Yulara runs from 20.6°C to 28.9°C, so every walking tour runs at its full length and the base track is comfortable well into the morning.

The cost is the cold start. Sunrise tours leave before dawn, and climatestotravel.com puts the average July overnight low at 4.5°C. AAT Kings suggests a jumper in winter, so pack layers you can carry.

October to March

Summer means a mean maximum of 38.6°C in January and long stretches above 35°C. The park asks walkers to do the base walk in the cooler morning hours and finish before 11 am in hot weather. Operators respond by starting earlier, so a summer sunrise walk is shifted rather than shortened.

Some walks close for heat: Lungkata closes from 2 pm at 40°C or more, and the Valley of the Winds beyond Karu Lookout closes from 11 am at 36°C or more. Reviewers of the base walk also mention flies on warm mornings.

Rain and the Wettest Months

Rain is light at Yulara. December is the wettest month at 40.3 mm and August the driest at 5.0 mm, so no month is a washout. Heat is the factor that changes your tour, not rain.

The west face glowing red at the sunset viewing area during an Uluru sunset tour, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Northern Territory

The car sunset viewing area faces the rock. The park lists separate car and bus sunset viewing areas.

How Many Days You Need

One day

One day works if you sleep at Yulara. Fly in the night before, take a sunrise tour, rest through the middle of the day, then watch sunset from a viewing area with the pass you already paid for. The sunrise and Kata Tjuta coach tour adds the domes to the same morning.

One day from Alice Springs is a different animal: the day trip is about 5 hours each way by coach, so most of the day is on the road. It is rated 4.7 from 864 reviews and ends with a sunset BBQ.

Two days

Two nights at Yulara is the shape most people should book. Sunrise walk on the first morning, rest, sunset the same evening. The second morning goes to Kata Tjuta, either on the sunrise coach or in a hire car for the Valley of the Winds.

That leaves an afternoon for the Cultural Centre, open daily 7:00 am to 5:45 pm, and room for the flight before dinner.

Three days or more

Three days lets you do the base circuit slowly, take Kata Tjuta properly with the Valley of the Winds, and add Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park. The A$38 pass covers 3 consecutive days, so a longer stay needs the A$50 annual pass.

AAT Kings, Adventure Tours Australia and Intrepid sell multi-day trips that string Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon together. The multi-day table compares them with the 3-day safari on this page.

Getting to Uluru and Around the Park

Flying In

Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) sits at Yulara, about 20 minutes from the park according to AAT Kings. AAT Kings lists direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns. Kayak and Flightconnections also list Brisbane flights that may be seasonal.

By route measurement Yulara to Uluru is about 21 km and 24 minutes. Uluru to the Valley of the Winds car park at Kata Tjuta is about 56 km and 50 minutes. Those numbers matter when a tour says pickup before dawn.

Driving From Alice Springs

AAT Kings puts Uluru about 450 km south-west of Alice Springs, roughly a 5.5-hour scenic drive. A route measurement gives 435 km and about 4 hours 54 minutes. The AAT Kings coach stops at Erldunda Roadhouse and passes Atila (Mount Conner), the flat-topped mesa people photograph believing it is Uluru.

At Yulara the options are a hire car, a tour, or the free resort shuttle that the resort lists as a guest amenity.

Where the Tours Take You

Almost everything happens at a few places. Mala car park is where base walks start and where the Mala walk runs to Kantju Gorge. The Kuniya walk leads to Mutitjulu Waterhole. The park lists separate car and bus sunset viewing areas facing the rock. Talinguru Nyakunytjaku is the sunrise viewing area, with Uluru and Kata Tjuta in view.

The Cultural Centre inside the park is open daily 7:00 am to 5:45 pm and explains Anangu law and Tjukurpa. Some tours stop there and others leave it to you.

The Sights Your Tour Will Name

What You Can and Can't Do at Uluru

The Climb Closed in 2019

Climbing Uluru has been prohibited since 26 October 2019. The Board of Management voted unanimously to close it in 2017, because climbing was not generally permitted under Tjukurpa, Anangu law and culture. Attempting it breaches the EPBC Act and brings penalties.

What replaced it is the base walk: 10.6 km of caves, waterholes and rock art, rated Grade 3 by the park.

Sacred Sites and the No-Photography Signs

Culturally sensitive sites are signed and marked on park maps, and photographing them is prohibited. Anangu ask visitors to take only wide shots of the north-east face, ideally 1 to 2 hours before sunset, and to ask permission before photographing people.

Drones and remote-controlled devices are prohibited across the park under the EPBC Act, and commercial photos or video need a media permit.

Whose Country This Is

Anangu are the traditional owners of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and Tjukurpa is the law and culture that the guided walks are built on. The park has been jointly managed by Anangu and Parks Australia since the land was handed back in 1985.

The European name came later. William Gosse sighted the rock in 1873 and named it Ayers Rock after the Chief Secretary of South Australia. In 1993 it became the first officially dual-named feature in the Northern Territory. Both names are correct, and Uluru is the one the traditional owners use.

Kata Tjuta, about 56 km and 50 minutes by road from Uluru. Walpa Gorge is a 2.6 km return walk of about 1 hour and the one the coach tour includes.

What to Bring and the Rules That Bite

The short list that separates a good morning at the rock from a miserable one.

Two Litres of Water

AAT Kings asks base walkers to bring at least 2 litres. Bring more in summer.

Finish by 11 am in the Heat

The park asks walkers to finish the base walk before 11 am in hot weather. Beyond Karu Lookout in the Valley of the Winds closes from 11 am when 36°C or more is forecast or reached.

A Fly Net

Reviewers mention flies on warm mornings at the rock. A head net is a cheap fix.

Closed Shoes and Layers

Wear closed shoes, since the Segway tour refuses flip-flops. AAT Kings suggests a jumper in winter for sunrise starts.

Getting Around

Yulara to Uluru is about 21 km, 24 minutes by road. Most tours include hotel pickup, and the resort lists a free shuttle as a guest amenity.

Uluru Tours: Questions People Ask

What is the best Uluru tour?

For most first visits it is a sunrise base walk, because it puts you at the rock in the cool hours and covers about 10.5 km of caves, waterholes and rock art. The 5.5-hour walk at $147 is the lowest fare for it and the six-hour small-group trek at $175 caps the group at 11. If walking that far is not on, the Segway tour rides the same base and is rated 4.9, and the 20-minute flight at $128.93 shows the whole formation from the air.

What is the best month to go to Uluru?

May to September, when the average daytime maximum at Yulara sits between 20.6°C and 28.9°C and no walk gets cut short by heat. June is the coolest month at 20.6°C. January averages 38.6°C, and the park asks walkers to finish the base walk before 11 am in hot weather.

How many days do you need to visit Uluru?

Two nights at Yulara is the honest minimum: sunrise on the base track, sunset the same evening, Kata Tjuta on the second morning. Three days lets you add the Valley of the Winds and Kings Canyon. See the full breakdown.

How expensive is it to go to Uluru?

Tours run from $128.93 for the flight to $280 for the Alice Springs day trip, and the park pass adds A$38 (about $26.69) an adult for 3 days, with under 18s free. The larger costs are the flight into Ayers Rock Airport and a night at Yulara, where the resort publishes no room prices. Full cost breakdown here.

Is the park pass included in tour prices?

Usually not. Most tours on this page leave the A$38 (about $26.69) pass out, including the Alice Springs day trip. Three listings contradict themselves on it, so confirm at checkout, and the 3-day safari includes park fees. A$38 covers 3 consecutive days and an annual pass is A$50. The all-in table shows both totals.

Can you still climb Uluru?

No. Climbing has been prohibited since 26 October 2019. The Board of Management voted unanimously to close it, because climbing was not generally permitted under Tjukurpa, and attempting it breaches the EPBC Act. The base walk is the way to see the rock up close.

Do any tours go to Kata Tjuta?

Two cards on this page do. The sunrise and Kata Tjuta coach tour at $147 watches sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, then walks Walpa Gorge between the domes, and the 3-day safari adds the Valley of the Winds area. Kata Tjuta is about 56 km and 50 minutes by road from Uluru. The Valley of the Winds is a 7.4 km loop rated Grade 4, and the walk beyond Karu Lookout closes from 11 am when 36°C or more is forecast or reached. See the Kata Tjuta tours.

Where should I stay near Uluru?

At Yulara, about 24 minutes from the rock by road. Ayers Rock Resort lists seven properties there, from luxury Sails in the Desert to the campground. Sails in the Desert is named as a pickup point on several tour listings. The five options are compared here.

What is the Field of Light and how do I see it?

It is an art installation by Bruce Munro with about 50,000 solar-powered spindles of light spread across the desert in sight of Uluru, extended until at least April 2027. The cheapest entry is the sunrise coach tour at $96.70. The Field of Light section covers pickup times and the resort's dinner versions.

Can you fly to Uluru from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane?

Yes. AAT Kings lists direct flights to Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) from Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns, and Brisbane flights shown by aggregators may be seasonal. AAT Kings puts the airport about 20 minutes from the park. The alternative is flying to Alice Springs and driving about 450 km. Uluru tours from Sydney explains how the flight-plus-tour combinations work.

Can I fly a drone or photograph everything at Uluru?

No on both counts, with limits. Drones and remote-controlled devices are prohibited in the park under the EPBC Act and penalties apply. Photos of culturally sensitive sites, marked with signs and on park maps, are prohibited, and Anangu ask visitors to photograph only wide shots of the north-east face. Ask permission before photographing people. The park's photography page has the full rules.

Do I need a tour to see Uluru?

No. Buy the A$38 (about $26.69) park pass, drive in with a hire car or use the resort shuttle, and you can walk the Mala Walk, watch sunset from the official viewing areas and visit the Cultural Centre on your own. What a tour adds is the guide, the transport and the timing. What a trip to Uluru costs adds up both ways of doing it.

Are there Uluru tours for seniors or people who cannot walk far?

Yes, with care over the choice. The Segway circuit discourages over-65s and has a minimum age of 12 per its listing. The scenic plane flight suits all fitness levels per its listing, and the coach sunrise tour is described as suitable for all age groups. A small-group sunset tour with minimal walking is another easy option. See the sunset small-group tour for a five-hour outing with short walks and sparkling wine at the end.

Who are the traditional owners of Uluru?

The Anangu are the traditional owners, and Tjukurpa is their law and culture, which governs what visitors may climb, photograph and walk. The park was handed back to Anangu in 1985 and is now jointly managed by Anangu and Parks Australia through a Board of Management. The park's history page explains the handback and why the climb closed.

Start with the full base of Uluru on foot at sunrise, with a light breakfast on the way.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before on this listing. The A$38 park pass is bought separately.
