How Much Does It Cost to Visit Uluru

How much does it cost to visit Uluru? The park pass is A$38 (about $26.69) per adult, and that is the smallest line on the bill. Flights, beds and food at Yulara cost more than the rock itself, and the biggest swing is what you choose to do once there. This page prices the trip line by line, from the A$38 pass to a $712.69 three-day camping safari, and sets out three sample budgets by travel style. Browse the Australia Uluru Tour catalogue first, then cost the rest of the trip here.

Quick answer The full bill, line by line

The entry pass is A$38 (about $26.69) per adult for 3 consecutive days, and under 18s enter free. A trip for one costs far more than the pass, because Happy Travels puts return flights to Ayers Rock Airport at roughly A$450-850 and Yulara is the base beside the park. The biggest levers are the gateway you fly to, the bed you pick and whether your tour includes the pass and meals.

Key takeaways

Uluru Trip Cost at a Glance

The fixed costs are small. The pass is A$38 (about $26.69) and under 18s go free. Flights, beds and tours drive the total.

The Main Lines for a Three-night Trip

The table lines up the big items for one adult over three nights. Flight ranges are what Happy Travels calls typical returns to Ayers Rock Airport, and in 2022 The Guardian put Jetstar returns from about A$270 Melbourne and A$350 Sydney outside the peak, over A$800 in the August-September peak. The resort's own page prints no room rates, so the bed is priced at booking.

Where the Money Actually Goes

A family with two adults and two children pays nothing for the kids to enter the park, so the A$38 (about $26.69) pass is rarely the budget problem. The flight and the bed are. Yulara is where the park's resort beds are, which is why the room line matters more than the entry line.

Dinners are the other swing item, from a pub burger at A$18 in The Guardian's 2022 prices to the Tali Wiru dinner from A$455 (about $319.62) on the resort's experiences page.

Park Pass Prices and What They Cover

The park pass is the one fee nobody escapes. It is set by Parks Australia and applies to everyone entering Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Prices and Validity

An adult pass costs A$38 (about $26.69) and covers three consecutive days. An annual pass is A$50 (about $35.12). Visitors under 18 enter free, so children pay only their tour fare.

There is also an annual pass for NT-registered vehicles at A$109 (about $76.57) that covers the driver and all passengers, though it does not apply to tour or hire vehicles. A quarter of the pass revenue supports Anangu homelands and training.

AnnualA$50 (about $35.12)One adult for 12 months

Under 18FreeAll park entry

How to Buy and Use It

Buy the pass online before you travel, or collect one at the park entry station on the way in, using the left-hand lane and scanning the QR code. The pass covers Uluru-Kata Tjuta only, so Kakadu needs its own pass. Within the three days it covers entry to Uluru, Kata Tjuta and the Cultural Centre.

The 3-day camping safari lists national park entry fees as included, the day tours here mostly exclude the pass, and three listings contradict themselves in their own fine print, so confirm at checkout before you book.

Cheapest Way to Get to Uluru

You can fly direct to Ayers Rock Airport, or fly cheaper to Alice Springs and cover the last 435 km by road. The second route trades time for money.

Two Routes Compared

Direct flights into Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) are the fast option but the fares swing with the season. Happy Travels puts typical returns at A$450-850, and in 2022 The Guardian found Jetstar returns from about A$270 Melbourne and A$350 Sydney outside the peak, rising above A$800 in August and September. The road option runs through Alice Springs, 434.5 km from Yulara by road, about five hours of driving.

AAT Kings sells the coach leg from A$195 per person, which removes the hire car entirely.

The Last Few Kilometres

Ayers Rock Airport sits at Yulara, about 20 minutes from the park by the AAT Kings measure. Uluru Tours Australia says the airport-to-resort shuttle is free, so no transfer cost lands on arrival. Travellers coming from Sydney can compare flights and packages on the Sydney page, and the coach-and-tour option from the centre of Australia is covered on the Alice Springs page.

Getting Around Yulara and the Park

The distances are short but real. Yulara to Uluru is 21.3 km by road, about 24 minutes, and Kata Tjuta's Valley of the Winds car park is 55.9 km from Uluru.

Hire Car, Bus or Tour Coach

A hire car gives freedom for sunrise and sunset runs but costs by the day. The Guardian put the cheapest hire from Yulara airport at about A$320 a day in 2022, and Uluru Tours Australia advises booking well ahead because supply is limited. The hop-on hop-off bus was A$49 return to Uluru and A$80 to Kata Tjuta in The Guardian's 2022 figures, running sunrise and sunset slots only.

The free resort shuttle is a Yulara amenity and its route is not published, so do not plan park trips around it. Against the 2022 hire marker of A$320 (about $224.79) before fuel, a guided sunrise coach tour sells from $147 on this site.

Distances Worth Knowing

Uluru is a 24 minute drive from Yulara. The Valley of the Winds car park at Kata Tjuta is 55.9 km from Uluru, about another 50 minutes, so a Kata Tjuta morning is a long outing in a hire car and a natural fit for a guided coach day. Gate hours change by month, opening as early as 5:00 am in summer and 6:30 am in midwinter, and everyone must be out by closing.

Where to Sleep and What a Night Costs

Yulara is where the park's beds are, and Ayers Rock Resort lists seven of them.

The Seven Properties

The resort lists seven places to sleep. Sails in the Desert sits at the top, Desert Gardens Hotel is 4.5-star, Emu Walk Apartments have one or two bedrooms, the Outback Hotel and The Lost Camel Hotel cover the mid range, Outback Lodge is hostel style with shared rooms, and Ayers Rock Campground is the camping option. Longitude 131 is a separate luxury camp near the airport.

The Guardian's 2022 guide noted a two-night minimum on the hotels, so check the minimum for your dates.

How Rates Work

The resort's own page prints no room rates and no campground price, so the cost of a night is set when you search your dates. Price the same dates at all seven properties before you decide, because the gap between the campground and a hotel is the largest single swing in a Yulara budget. The full range, plus what each property is like, sits in the where to stay guide.

Food and Drink Costs at Yulara

Food is where a budget is won or lost at Yulara. The IGA supermarket and the resort dinner ladder sit poles apart.

Eating Cheap Versus Eating Out

The Guardian's 2022 snapshot put a cafe pie at A$10.50, a takeaway chicken from the IGA at A$11, a pub burger at A$18 and a pizza at A$25. Self-catering from the supermarket, especially with an apartment or a campsite, is usually the biggest food saving at the resort. At the other end, the resort's dinner experiences run from A$295 to A$455 per adult.

The 3-day camping safari sits in between, because its $712.69 fare includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Dinner experienceAdult fromChild from
Sounds of SilenceA$295 (about $207.22)A$150 (about $105.37)
Wintjiri Wiru Sunset DinnerA$315 (about $221.27)A$135 (about $94.83)
Field of Light Uluru DinnerA$360 (about $252.88)A$180 (about $126.44)
Tali WiruA$455 (about $319.62)No child price listed
Australian Native High TeaA$92 (about $64.63)A$55 (about $38.64)

What a Family Dinner Adds

The dinner prices are fixed "from" prices on the resort's experiences page. Two adults and two children at Sounds of Silence pay A$295 twice and A$150 twice, which is A$890 (about $625.19) before drinks. The same four people at a pub, using The Guardian's 2022 burger price of A$18, would pay A$72 for four burgers.

Both are legitimate choices. They just need to be decided before you arrive.

Tours and Experiences: What They Add

A tour is often cheaper than it looks once you count what the fare carries. Some include the A$38 pass and meals, some include neither.

The Bookable Price Ladder

The table lists the tours sold on this site with their price, length and pass status, and adds the A$38 (about $26.69) pass where the listing says it is not included. Three other listings, the Segway ride and two guided Uluru tours, contradict themselves on the pass in their own fine print, so confirm at checkout before booking. The 3-day camping safari is the clearest value case, because the fare carries the park entry fee, two nights in a permanent tent and all meals, and it ends in Alice Springs so it doubles as your transfer.

Uluru day trip from Alice Springs$2801 dayNot included$306.69
3-day camping safari to Kings Canyon$712.693 days, 2 nightsIncluded$712.69

Tour Versus Hire Car, Cost Per Hour

The sunrise base walk tour is $147 for 5.5 hours with coach transport and a light breakfast, or $173.69 with the pass. The Guardian's 2022 hire marker of A$320 (about $224.79) buys one day of hire before fuel. A car wins on flexibility across three or four days, a tour wins on a single morning.

On the pass, a safari with the entry fee included cancels the A$38 (about $26.69) line entirely, and under 18s never pay it, so children cost only their tour fare. For comparison, Uluru Tours Australia quotes a sunset tour at A$109 (about $76.57) and a combined sunrise and Kata Tjuta day at A$209 (about $146.81), which sits in the same band as the listings here.

Free and Cheap Things to Do at Uluru

A lot at Uluru costs nothing beyond the A$38 (about $26.69) pass, and the resort adds more for guests.

What the Pass Alone Buys

The Uluru base walk is 10.6 km and about 3.5 hours at Grade 3, with no extra fee once you hold the pass. The Mala walk runs 2 km return to Kantju Gorge, the Liru walk covers 4 km from the Cultural Centre, and at Kata Tjuta the Walpa Gorge walk is 2.6 km return while the Valley of the Winds loop is 7.4 km and Grade 4. The ranger-guided Mala walk is free for all park visitors, starting at 8:00 am from October to April and 10:00 am from May to September.

The Cultural Centre is open daily 7:00 am to 5:45 pm, and Uluru Tours Australia lists it among the sights the pass covers.

Free Things at the Resort and After Dark

Ayers Rock Resort lists free guest experiences that cost nothing beyond your bed, including guided garden walks, camel visits, Indigenous art galleries, bush food tastings and a didgeridoo workshop. The Guardian's 2022 guide added the Gallery of Central Australia, free with daily tours from 10:30 am, and free stargazing from outside Yulara. Astrophotography has to be done outside the park, and drones are prohibited inside it.

Three Sample Budgets for Uluru

Here are three line-item budgets built from published figures. Rates that move are labelled with their source and year.

Shoestring, Mid Range and Comfortable

The shoestring trip flies to Alice Springs, takes the AAT Kings coach from A$195 per person, camps, self-caters from the IGA and spends one guided morning at the Field of Light sunrise tour for $96.70. The mid range trip flies direct toward the low end of Happy Travels' A$450-850 range, takes the $147 sunrise coach tour at $173.69 with the pass, and eats a mix of IGA and pub food. The comfortable trip flies direct toward the top of that range, stays at a resort hotel, books the Sounds of Silence dinner from A$295 (about $207.22) and adds the scenic flight at $128.93.

How the Budget Scales

Some lines double for two travellers and some do not. A room or apartment is one line whether one person or a couple sleeps in it, so the per-person bed cost falls as heads per room rise. Flights and coach seats double exactly.

Children enter the park free, so the pass line drops to zero for them and they cost only their tour fare where a listing offers one. For two adults, the mid range trip roughly doubles the flight and tour lines but keeps one room line.

Ways to Pay Less

Six levers move the total more than everything else combined. None of them costs you the rock.

The Six Levers

First, fly outside the August-September peak, where The Guardian found Jetstar fares above A$800 in 2022 against about A$270 from Melbourne with flexible dates. Second, use Alice Springs as the gateway and take the coach from A$195 per person. Third, self-cater from the IGA, the cheapest food in The Guardian's 2022 Yulara prices.

Fourth, book tours that include the pass and meals, such as the 3-day camping safari at $712.69, which removes the A$38 line and the food line together. Fifth, skip the annual A$50 (about $35.12) pass unless you will return within a year. Sixth, remember children enter free, which trims a family bill by A$38 (about $26.69) per child.

  • Fly outside the August-September peak
  • Enter via Alice Springs
  • Self-cater from the IGA supermarket
  • Choose tours with the pass and meals included
  • Buy the 3-day A$38 pass, not the annual, for one visit
  • Count children as free on the pass line

What Not to Cut

Water, sun protection and early starts are safety lines, not budget lines. The base walk advice is to finish before 11 am in hot weather, some tracks close on summer afternoons for heat-stroke risk, and the Valley of the Winds Karu lookout closes from 11 am at 36 °C or above. Book the sunrise slot and carry water.

Questions About Uluru Trip Costs

How much is the Uluru park pass?

An adult pass is A$38 (about $26.69) and covers three consecutive days in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. An annual pass is A$50 (about $35.12) and an NT-registered vehicle annual pass is A$109 (about $76.57). Under 18s enter free. Full prices sit on the official park pass page.

Can you buy the park pass at the gate?

Yes. You can pre-buy online or collect a pass at the park entry station on the way in, using the left-hand lane and scanning the QR code. The official pass page covers both options.

Do I need a park pass for the Field of Light?

The Field of Light sunrise tour listing includes entry to the installation and does not mention the park pass either way, so confirm at checkout before you book. The resort also sells a Field of Light dinner from A$360 (about $252.88). The sunrise tour is $96.70, see the Field of Light sunrise tour.

Is there a seniors or discount park pass?

The official page lists no seniors or concession rate. It does state that under 18s enter free, and that school and eligible youth groups can apply for free entry. Commercial operators and approved agents buying adult passes online get a 5 percent discount. Details are on the Parks Australia pass page.

Is it cheaper to fly to Uluru or to Alice Springs?

Uluru Tours Australia says Alice Springs flights are often cheaper than Ayers Rock fares. From Alice you then need 435 km of road, a coach from A$195 per person (AAT Kings) or a hire car at A$50-160 a day (Happy Travels). Compare the day-tour option on the Alice Springs page.

Do I need a car at Uluru?

Not necessarily. The free resort shuttle is a Yulara amenity with no published park route, so reach Uluru and Kata Tjuta by hire car, the hop-on hop-off bus or a tour. A guided sunrise coach tour from $147 covers transport and timing for one morning. The trade-offs are in the getting around section.

What costs more than the park pass at Uluru?

Flights, beds and dinners. Happy Travels puts typical returns at A$450-850, room rates are set at booking, and the resort's dinner experiences start at A$295 (about $207.22). The pass itself is modest at A$38 (about $26.69) for three days. The workarounds are in the ways to pay less section.
